September 17 – Protest and GMO Labeling information event at Monsanto offices in Oxnard, 4 – 6:30 pm

October 15 – Global Noise Around the World

November 5 – Occupation in Washington, D.C.

Proposals

1. Lucas read a statement concerning police brutality. He wants to send the statement as a letter to all legislators in the 805 area asked Occupy 805 to endorse the statement and sign the letter. Members of the group asked for clarifications which Lucas addressed.

During the discussion, the assembly agreed to limit discussion of each proposal to six minutes beginning from the point in time that the decision was made.

Discussion continued on Lucas’ proposal. Janet offered to work with Lucas to craft the message, but Lucas was anxious to send the letters the night of the assembly. Kendra also offered to work on the wording. Audra suggested that a working group meet the next day. Lucas asked the assembly to empower the work group to wordsmith and sign the statement on behalf of Occupy 805, possibly with consensus from the next Occupy Santa Barbara general assembly. The proposal ran out of time without resolution.

2. Glenn asked Occupy 805 to endorse, participate in, and assist with the September 1 Dance Party and also asked everyone to take the proposal back to their own cities for endorsement. The proposal received consensus.

3. Adrienne passed out post cards and shared the address of Occupy Wall St. She asked everyone to use the post cards to let Occupy in New York know that we support them and wish we could be there for their event. She also suggested that we send post cards to others to let them know what we think about the upcoming election.

4. Kendra provided a presentation on the GMOs and the Proposition 37 Label GMO initiative on the upcoming ballot. She said that the pro campaign needs help to fight the big money opposition. She passed around a petition in support of Prop. 37 for individuals to sign. The assembly gave consensus for Occupy 805 to endorse and support Prop. 37 and to sign the petition as an organization. Audra stood aside because she does not want to take part in a system that she does not endorse.

5. Monsanto Protest
Janet shared information about the action that will take place at the Monsanto offices in Oxnard from 4 – 6:30 pm on September 17. The event has its own Facebook event page and is called Monsanto Protest and Yes on Prop 37 – GMO labeling. Occupy 805 previously endorsed the formation of a work group and now Janet is asking 805 to endorse the event. Lucas suggested that the protest start prior to employee arrival at Monsanto at the start of the work day. Janet responded that the purpose of the event is to educate about GMOs and the November ballot initiative. We don’t want to harass the employees. Kendra agreed with Janet and reminded the assembly that Occupy 805 has already endorsed the Label GMOs ballot initiative. After discussion Janet’s proposal was amended to state that people could protest at Monsanto all day if they desired, but the main event would still be held in the evening. The proposal received consensus as amended.

6. Lucas asked the assembly to affirm that the Ventura College English Department needs to include poetry. The proposal received consensus. Lucas then read a poem that he wrote about human rights. He asked Occupy 805 to endorse the poem and send it to all politicians in the 805 area code. The assembly reached consensus to have Lucas and other group member collaborate to create a poem as a group.

7. Janet proposed that Occupy 805 collaborate with Occupy Santa Barbara on a totally free market. She wants to create a working group for the market and other non-capitalist activities. Blair provide information that OSB requires a quorum of 13 to make decisions, which they have not had recently, but puts working groups together and does have a similar effort in the works. Lucas shared that OLA decides on a quorum by taking 90% of the average attendance of the last six meetings and using that as the number of attendees required for decision-making. Nico thinks that a totally free market could be arranged outside of Occupy and the groups don’t need to collaborate. Lucas asked to amend the proposal to set a date. Discussion on the proposal ran out of time. Janet and Blair agreed to exchange information and work together.

8. Lucas asked Occupy 805 to endorse solidarity with Judith of Santa Barbara in her efforts to shut down the nuclear power plant. The proposal received consensus.

The next meeting of Occupy 805 will be held on September 4, 2012 at 6:00 pm in Mission Park in Ventura.

The meeting closed at 8:00 pm with a solidarity clap.

Time keeper: Brian
Note-keepers: Tracy and Janet
Greeter: Glenn

1. REPORT BACKS

MAY 1st General Strike
Justin- reported that he differed from the rest of the group on May 1 by going to an action on the Santa Monica campus.

Lucas- reported on the May 1 Government Center action.

Shakti- said that they started the day with breakfast in front of McDonalds, carried foreclosure signs in front of various banks, and visited a congressional office before going to the Government Center.

Janet- reported on the Monsanto “mini” protest on May 1st.

Report on LA activities.  The 805 group marched to the main convergence point, went on to Pershing Square for events there. Many people joined direct actions during the day.

Lucas reported on attending the last OLA GA and said that there were no new people there.

2. ANNOUNCMENTS

Brain- talked about Occupy News Radio.  He said that he needs help and donations. Visit OccupyNewsRadio.org to listen and to make donations.

Audra- the NATO summit coming up in Chicago.  Space is still available on the LA bus leaving on May 15 and returning on May 22.  Travel expenses are being paid for people on the bus. She will be going and live-streaming

3.  PROPOSALS

Janet-Support Bradley Manning event occurring May 24 at a location in Pasadena from 3 – 6 pm.  ( could be available-$5 reimbursment toward train tickets to the event.)  Attendees from 805 can either carpool or take the train.  The proposal was consented.

Lucas- Demand justice for Kelly Thomas and issue a statement to the Orange County DA to prosecute all 6 officers, demand drug test for officers, and participate in actions at the Orange County courthouse:
• Consent to have Occupy 805 banner down there
• Lucas will draft a letter from us and Randy said he will help. The proposal was consented.
• Lucas- Nuclear plant action: to endorse and stand in solidarity with Occupy Boston on June 20 or maybe June 13.  It was noted that a 94 year old woman in Santa Barbara wants to have an action at Diablo Canyon plant.  This woman was involved in shutting the plant down in the 80s.  The proposed was table until a larger or specific action is planned nearby.

Lucas-OLA feeds the homeless after their assembly.  We should do the same on the pier.  We could call it “Feed In on the Beach.”  The proposal needs a working group.  Consented to form a working group.

Glenn-Anonymous is protesting businesses that support CISPA.  We need a working group to plan substantial protests. Contact Glenn for the dates, etc.
The proposal was consented.

Justin-National Committee Member of the Socialist Party of America wants to ask Moorpark City Council to pass resolution opposing corporate personhood, just like T. O.  Justin and Janet agreed to help lead this effort for the Moorpark area and to go before the Moorpark City Council. Continue efforts with working group.

Justin- host events for students at the community colleges, like Civics Day. And  have an O805 GA on the college campus in August to inspire college students to start their own assembly. Proposal was tabled.

Lucas-write a letter from 805 to the community college graduating class.  Decision to take that action only as long as nothing is printed  – only use electronic means of distribution. The proposal was consented.

Janet-Continue Monsanto protests (GMO labeling is on the ballot, now let’s get it passed).  Join with other groups to have a movie night to show educational film.  A working group was formed.

4. Questions:

Do we endorse a letter supporting Occupy FCC?  Yes.

We have content for Occupy Ventura Star Newspaper.  Lucas wants to write it.

Suggestion was made to reach out to OLA for support.

5. Wrap up/discussions/next meeting:

-The group discussed the identity of Occupy 805 and when and where to have the next meeting.  The 805 area code is very large.  It extends from Simi Valley to just south of Monterey, but the only interest in our meetings has come from Santa Barbara to Simi Valley.

-There was interest expressed in defining what the 805 is, by creating or adopting a manifesto. Discussion was made to create a working group to create the 805 manifesto.  Some people felt that it’s not necessary because Occupy 805 is a coordinating/action based group.

-Occupy Oxnard is active but didn’t show up tonight.  They meet every week.

-A representative from Veterans for Peace was in attendance-Joe.

-Lucas encouraged us to meet at the Government Center every Tuesday morning, speaking during public comment at the Supervisors meeting and then holding a People’s Assembly in the atrium.

-The decision was made to hold the next 805 GA on June 5.  The location will be determined based on the interest of Occupy Santa Barbara.

-Someone pointed out that the budget cuts at the junior colleges are planned to include cutting out GED education.  The suggestion was made that we could provide classes to help individuals studying for their GED.

-A request was made that anyone with information about actions planned by other groups post them to Facebook and notify Occupy News Radio.

Facilitator: Dug Johannes
Notetaker: John Brennan

—REPORT BACKS—

Ojai City Council Meeting
Lucas: Went to Ojai City Council meeting on Tuesday, Feb 28, 2012 and touched up on the matter of corporate personhood. He also informed the council of the dangers of hydraulic fracturing and specifically the intent of doing fracking near the Ojai Watershed. He asked that the Ojai City Council pass a law that fracking is illegal near the Ojai Watershed because of water safety issues. He invited them to the Halliburton protest. He also urged the city to pass a resolution to label Genetically Modified Foods (GMOs). He also invited them to the Monsanto protest at Seminis Seeds on March 16th at 2700 Camino del Sol in Oxnard. He also informed them of the May 1st General Strike and Boycott and urged that they give their non-emergency employees the day off on May 1st.

#F29 Shut Down the Corporations
Dug: 30 people showed up. Protested at the intersection of Port Hueneme and Perkins Road. We then marched to Halliburton. The press was there. The action went from 8am till 2pm. Two police cars came to us and said someone reported that we had “obscene” signs. They saw our signs and saw no problem. Two students from Thousand Oaks High who were at the rally started their own Occupy Movement at TOHS.

—ANNOUNCEMENTS—

Monsanto Protest
Matt: Announced about the Monsanto protest coordinated thru Occupy So Cal and is a national call to action. This protest is at Seminis Seeds (Owned by Monsanto) on March 16th at 2700 Camino del Sol in Oxnard.

Black March
Lucas informed us of Black March. There is new legislation similar to PIPA and SOPA. Black March is a boycott of all entertainment purchases. For more info the website is: http://black-march.com/

Ventura County Community College Budget Cuts Vote
Kathy: Announced that so far the VCCCD (Ventura County Community College District) Bd of Supervisors is mtg on Tues, March 13th at 7pm (closed session on personnel, etc at 5:30)… at their headquarters with Ventura Unified school district on Stanley Ave.. presumably to vote on proposed budget cuts. The agenda doesn’t get posted until much closer to the mtg, and she doubts that the place will change, though they may go to the big room in the same bldg. Kathy will send a reminder and more info (hopefully) as the time gets closer. Don’t know if it will be important to speak, but she’ll likely say something to encourage use of surplus funds and cutting more of admin, esp at schools as that was a major proposal option of the 3 presented at the last mtg.

—PROPOSALS—

  1. Quorum is to be 6 people. This is a living document and may be changed by at least 6 people in the future. If the quorum is not met, an official GA will not take place. Proposal passed.
  2. Endorsement of Occupy So Cal Meet up on March 11th. There will be live music and a GA at McArthur Park but this is TBD. They will also have guest speakers and teach-ins. A great place to network. Proposal to endorse Occupy So Cal Meet up. Proposal passed.
  3. Creation of the College Outreach Working Group with Brittany, Lucas, Kate and the students from TOHS. Proposal passed.
  4. Endorsement of Women’s Circle / Occupy LA Rally on Saturday, March 10, 2012 – 10:00am at LA City Hall to stand up for women’s rights. More info to be announced at http://occupylosangeles.org/?q=node/8519 Proposal passed.
  5. Endorsement of Occupy for Education as a Human Right on March 5th at the State House in Sacramento. Proposal passed.
