FROM — PHYSICIANS FOR SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY LOS ANGELES and Rocketdyne Cleanup Coalition
Last week, a fire broke out, at SSFL (Santa Susana Field Laboratories), burning hundreds of acres of vegetation growing in contaminated soil. That fire obviously released some of those contaminants and transported them offsite in the smoke. It is impossible to burn a contaminated site without releasing some of that contamination. Had the Responsible Parties met their obligations for full cleanup by last year, there wouldn’t be concern about the release of contamination in such a fire for those portions of SSFL that burned. And for those that didn’t, the failure to perform full cleanup as promised means continued risk any time a new fire might occur. *Santa Susan Field Laboratory is the site of several nuclear meltdowns and is a SUPERFUND toxic site.

FROM — http://www.ssflworkgroup.org/

The Dept. of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) has finally released its draft Environmental Impact Report (EIR) for the SSFL cleanup. The EIR includes proposals that violate the AOC cleanup agreements DTSC signed with the DOE and NASA for full cleanup of their SSFL areas. For Boeing’s part of SSFL, the EIR blocks from even being considered cleanup to the standards DTSC hand long promised.

The EIR also omits cancer risk information and hypes potential negative impacts of the cleanup, presenting a very inaccurate assessment of the SSFL cleanup. Tell DTSC to keep its promises and require ALL SSFL contamination to be cleaned up!

To make matters worse, Boeing has pulled out all the stops by releasing a website called “Protect Santa Susana” urging people to submit comments to DTSC and elected officials recommending a cleanup that would leave most of the contamination not cleaned up! To fight back, cleanup advocates have launched a new website, Protect Santa Susana from Boeing, that counters Boeing’s disinformation campaign. Please visit the site and share widely.

Comments on the draft EIR are one of the most important and final opportunities for the public to weigh in on the cleanup.

Please submit your comment to DTSC and attend the public hearings that DTSC is holding next week.
• Thursday, October 5 – The October 5 meeting will be held from 6 – 9 pm at the Grand Vista Hotel, 999 Enchanted Way, Simi Valley, CA 93065.
• Saturday, October 7 – The October 7 meeting will be held from 2 – 5 pm at St. John Eudes Church, 9901 Mason Avenue, Chatsworth, CA 91311.

2/10/14: Report from Meeting — From http://www.ssflworkgroup.org/

IMG_2457800

The meeting put on by SSFL Work Group drew a capacity audience in Simi Valley on February 5th. Presenters included independent experts, community representatives, and agencies responsible for cleaning up the nuclear and chemical contamination at the Santa Susana Field Laboratory (Rocketdyne.)

After an information-packed evening, community members expressed a strong desire for more opportunities to be heard and to hold agencies accountable to their clean up commitments. Thank you to everyone who helped make the evening a success and to all who attended. Your energy and enthusiasm have sparked a renewed determination that Rocketdyne will be cleaned up to the letter of the law.

They will be posting meeting presentations, photos, and video from the meeting on their website in the next few days. Sign up for their mailing list to learn about upcoming opportunities to become involved in ensuring a thorough SSFL cleanup. Your voice will be heard.

———————————————

The Santa Susana Field Laboratory Work Group is hosting a community meeting on Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2014. Learn more about the nuclear and chemical contamination at the Santa Susana Field Lab (Rocketdyne) and efforts to clean it up.

Organized by mothers who are raising children close to this nuclear meltdown site, who are concerned about the health impact on the thousands who live nearby.

The Santa Susana Field Laboratory is one of 100s of Superfund sites in the U.S. No, not super fun, superfund meaning super toxic.

The Santa Susana Field Laboratory (SSFL) is a former nuclear and rocket engine testing facility that is contaminated with radiological and chemical pollutants. The 2,850 acre site is near Simi Valley, Chatsworth, Canoga Park, Woodland Hills, West Hills, Westlake Village, Agoura Hills, Oak Park, Calabasas, and Thousand Oaks.

Come hear about the radioactive compounds the EPA found in their recent $40 million study of the soil (the findings include strontium-90, plutonium-239 and cesium-137) and learn more about the contaminated water running off the site.

Meeting will include:

·  Short Film About the 1959 partial nuclear meltdown at SSFL

·  Other SSFL radioactive accidents and spills

·  Recent EPA study finding 500 samples of radioactive contamination

·  Toxic chemical contamination from rocket testing

·  Status of carrying out Cleanup Agreements

·  Exceedances of pollution standards in water leaving the site

·  Compensation program for ill former workers & their families

*DIRECTIONS

*For over twenty years, the Santa Susana Field Laboratory Inter-Agency Work Group has served to keep the community informed about the contamination at SSFL and assure that it is thoroughly cleaned up.

How Radioactive Is Our Ocean?

Screen shot 2014-01-21 at 9.15.52 PMThe release of radioactive contaminants from Fukushima remains an unprecedented event for the people of Japan and the Pacific Ocean. Help scientists at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution reveal the ongoing spread of radiation across the Pacific and its evolving impacts on the ocean.

There currently is no U.S. or international agency monitoring the arrival of radioactive water from Fukushima along the West Coast. This is an evolving situation that demands careful, consistent monitoring to make sure predictions are true.

The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution already has dozens of seawater samples from the coast of Japan out to the middle of the Pacific, but now we need new samples—from up and down the West Coast of North America and anywhere else we can get them. The trouble is, these samples are expensive to collect and analyze. That is why we are turning to you, your community, and your social network for help.

If you want to propose a sampling location near you, all you have to do is raise the cost of testing and shipping ($550 to $600 depending on location) and they will send you a sampling kit with everything you need. They will also help by setting up a fundraising webpage that you can email to your friends or post on your favorite social media site that will allow you to spread the word and track your progress. http://www.ourradioactiveocean.org/helpus.html
