One of the most polluted places in the state of California, SSFL (Santa Susana Field Laboratory) was the site of a partial nuclear reactor meltdown, numerous other nuclear accidents, and thousands of rocket tests and other activities that left the place a toxic mess, with contamination migrating offsite. Agreements were entered into and promises made by the agencies that the site would be cleaned up to the condition it was in before it was so badly polluted. Now those promises are in jeopardy.
The SSFL Cleanup at Risk!
In 2010, the community was promised that all of the contamination at the Santa Susana Field Lab would be cleaned up by 2017. With 2017 only months away, the cleanup has essentially not even begun.
Now there is an effort underway to break out of those obligations entirely and leave almost all of the contamination not cleaned up. This would be done by simply declaring the land parkland —either as a National Monument or as part of the proposed Rim of the Valley Corridor—and walking away from the promises for a full cleanup of the radioactivity and hazardous chemical pollution. About 98% of the contamination would remain not cleaned up. People living nearby would thus be at continued risk in perpetuity.
