Summary of the interview: Stephan Schwartz bases his exploration on the thought of Erica Chenowitz and Maria Stephans that social change campaigns are at least 4X more successful when they are non-violent. He attributes that power of change to mass consciousness, attitudes and awareness of the small daily ‘quotidien’ choices that have consequences when they are the most compassionate and life-affirming. He compiled attributes of people who are successful creating social change:
1) share a common intention, not just consensus
2) have goals, but not cherished outcomes
3) accept that their goal may not be achieved in their lifetimes
4) accept authentically that they may not get credit for what they did
5) enjoy equality regardless of gender, religion, race, culture
6) forswear violence in word, act or thought
7) behave consistently with public postures
8) “act from beingness of life-affirming integrity”
His examples and stories are inspiring.
