Keystone

The State Department released its final environmental review of the Keystone XL tar sands pipeline. We now enter a decisive phase — of at least 90 days — in which President Obama must decide if this project is in our national interest.

The headlines today will tell you that the State Department just gave the Keystone XL a clean environmental bill of health, paving the way for the President to approve it. But you need to look deeper for the real story: the State Department’s review has acknowledged — for the very first time — that the tar sands pipeline could accelerate climate change.

Make no mistake: the climate upheaval that will result from the tar sands expansion driven by the Keystone XL will far exceed the State Department’s projections — which continue to downplay the risks to our planet.

But the State Department’s final review provides President Obama with more than enough ammunition to reject the climate-wrecking pipeline. It’s up to him.

Tell the President that the Keystone XL is not in our national interest and he must reject it. The President has promised to stop the tar sands pipeline if it will drive significantly more global warming pollution and climate chaos.

The evidence is now overwhelming that this project would do exactly that. It’s time for President Obama to keep his word, stand up to Big Oil and put our climate first.

The State Department has released its Keystone XL assessment, and it is a scandal. Not only does it repeat Big Oil lies about the Keystone XL that break with the scientific community, but it was quietly released to Big Oil before Congress, the American people or anyone else.

The decision is now in President Obama’s hands – and that’s whyTODAY, February 3rd, the Sierra Club, Rainforest Action Network, CREDO and 350  other groups have organized nationwide protest vigils to send a clear and urgent message: Keystone XL is a climate disaster, and President Obama must reject it.
